What has happened to Freedom of Speech?

I am not on Facebook that often and occasionally will share a post or post something hooking related.  I am currently part of the 7 day rug challenge.

I recently shared a post that some people did not agree with regarding mail in voting.  That is fine.  This is America.  You have the right to disagree . . . at least that is what I believe.  Is there only freedom of speech if I agree with you?

If there is a way to prove who you are, I have no problem with mail in voting.  I have to prove who I am to board an airplane so why not prove who I am to vote?  A woman I have known for 30+ years took exception to my post.  She sent me a private message stating that if I was not on the same political side as she is to unfriend her.  I responded back that I am not that shallow but she could unfriend me if she so chose.  Yep.  She did.  The thing I find most ironic is the fact that she spent her entire career in journalism (an assistant editor of a local paper for many years) and isn't the #1 thing of journalists freedom of speech?

I am curious as to what you have to say regarding mail in voting.  You may agree or disagree.  That is the beauty of America.

~GOD BLESS AMERICA ~

Thanks so much for stopping by.
Pug hugs :)

Oh but you will probably be chastised by some again. I replied to your FB post but will do it again here. I will go in person to vote, as recently done for the primary last week. Do not trust the mail in voting system because people could steal those mail in votes before checks are made and the thief put in what they want.

My local radio station reported that previous owners of a home now occupied by a new resident received the mail in vote in the other peoples' names. Too many variables for fraud and cleaning up the voting register isn't the answer because there will always be a way for fraud.

The one time I voted 'early' since I would be at a rug camp that week (November 2016) it was in person at the GOP Headquarters. Chose to drive the distance and do in person than have a mail in.

If you have to show your ID to get your DL, passport, buy alcohol and do most anything else, then you should have to vote in person and prove your identity by showing your DL. Enough said! I will still follow your blog. Love reading it!

I completely agree with you and Colleen. You are a common sense type of person.

Hi, Lauren. I believe in free speech too, but I also mailed in my ballot when I was a military spouse stationed out of state. New Mexico has a great system for mail in and regular as well as early voting. So, I will respectfully disagree, but I will not unfriend you. :)

I lived in Oregon for 11 years. Oregon has mail-in voting and has for years. When we registered to vote we had to sign a form. The mail voter form has a place to "sign your name" when folded and put in the envelope your name appears in a window, it is verified before the envelope is opened and your vote counted. I had never heard of any problems while there. It was so easy to fill our your form, sign it, put it in the mail, or drop it off at a special mail box on police department/courthouse property. After spending hours in the hot sun in Florida voting by mail was heaven. Now that I'm in AL we vote in person which hasn't been a problem as our voting place is at a church which has a huge room so there is room for social distancing. As of tomorrow we have state wide mandatory mask wearing.

We live in Canada, are American citizens and we have to mail in our vote. While nothing is perfect this side of heaven there will always be fraud. There’s plenty of fraud voting in person too (ex. thousands of ballots from different precincts “go missing.”) But with covid absolutely rampant the safest vote would be a mail in vote.

Oh boy ....I think it is a good idea to mail in your vote , but can see the problems with that ....I just can't wait to Vote in November and get that idiot out of the White House ....how many people did I annoy by saying that ???? UGH !!!!

Someone unfriended you because of a different opinion...no matter if it was political, religious or how mix some lemonade. How childish and self absorbed is this nightmare! We knew someone who was like that...stopped dating a man because he wouldn't vote for her choice as president. That was more than enough to walk away from that individual.
For some people...its freedom of speech as long as you agree with them completely. Walk away...walk away!

Well, you couldn't get rid of me that easily...but I happen to agree with you 100%....While fraud is possible with both mail-in and in-person voting, I think it's pretty obvious that the mail method certainly lends itself to fraud much more easily. And I have been hearing more and more instances of how it is already starting...someone's dead cat got a ballot? Another lady's deceased father all of a sudden got TWO ballots although he had never ever gotten one before and wasn't even a US citizen. Perhaps not all the stories circulating of the fraud are true, but even if some of them are, it's crazy. If that were my only option, of course I would do it rather than not vote...but it almost seems to me that there is a huge push to MAKE that our only option and that makes me truly snarly. 5 of the largest cities here were actually given state money to advocate for mail-in voting. !! Anyways...you shouldn't have gotten me started. I think freedom of speech has become a one-sided freedom these days. There are people who no longer comment on my posts because I don't share their beliefs. Really? I guess if they are that shallow (as you said) and narrow-minded, then I should count it a blessing that they choose to no longer associate with me. It is really quite pathetic and sad. One more reason I don't recognize this country when I wake up each day anymore....and have been avoiding social media for most intents and purposes. ~Robin~

I agree we have to prove who is voting I show my license at the polls here in NH why would I not with getting a mail in? If I agree or not where someone stands politically or on religion I would respect their right to say what they what rather I agree or not. But when it got nasty and just horrid stuff I did unfriend some people at the start but they were not long time friends and it was really nasty hateful things.

A friend of mine who works our voting booth here in town, she was telling me over the weekend that she thinks mail in voting will be like not voting at all. There will be those who know how you may vote and will conveniently lose your vote if they feel you are not voting the way they want you to. THis will be rigged in every polling center, so DONT do it. Go vote in person. Wear a mask, but DO NOT mail in a vote. Janice

I'm Canadian so I will stay out of the US politic but I prefer voting in person in normal time. We are not living in normal time and with the Covid-19, Voting by mail would be OK with me.
If your blogger friend defriended you, then you don't need friends like that. It's her loss because you are the most generous and caring person I know on Blogger.
Stay safe and well.
Hugs, Julia

Totally believe in freedom of speech, and I have my own political opinions, but don’t expect everyone to agree andI surely would not unfriend someone who presented themselves in a non condemning, reasonable manner. How childish. I generally vote in person, butdon’t know that going to the polls right now is worth the risk. Might do Mail in, though I agree re the inherent problems.

I don't know what is wrong with people lately, it just saddens me to see how people are behaving towards others.
I was having a discussion on a group about a subject I feel strongly about, water access and I could See it was going nowhere, so I guess the moderator thought so too and stopped commenting, lol. I am Leary of mail in, no way to know if it is legit and who did it.

I am so sorry someone felt that way. I live in California. We have had so much voter fraud because of mail in voting. Take it from me. You do not want it. Ever!! How do you think Pelosi, and all of the bunch of idiots that are tearing our country apart stay in power? Mail in voting. I have to show my drivers license every time I sign a legal paper.I think it should be more so when we vote.
I just got my internet connected five minutes ago. WoW!! I just can't believe some people and how they want to take away my free speech, but they can say anything they want.
Hang in there Lauren.

I have so many conflicting thoughts on it. Yes, in theory you should be able to prove your identity. In reality, there are those who can't afford to get copies of their birth certificates or may not have been one issued when they were born (I don't think that's as common now). Maybe someone found out about the requirements needed to fulfill identity requirements and it would take too long to get the birth certificate. Why doesn't a death or house sale get bounced against voter database automatically? Why aren't mail-in rules updated for new technology (mail in ballots in Iowa not counted because they only had official post office bar code but not the old fashioned dated cancelation over the stamp)? What about mail in ballots not counted because someone was "too busy" or "forgot about them". The unbalanced closing of polling places in non-white areas vs white areas for this round of primary voting is one reason mail-in voting should not be made more difficult, IMHO. I know dead people voting for Democrats is what's often trotted out as a reason to clamp down on mail in voting or making ID laws stricter, what about the recent Republican shenanigans in North Carolina? The Iowa Republican convicted of voter fraud because she voted twice in person? Neither party can claim the high ground on voter fraud, whether by mail-in or in-person. Both sides have had their share of shit head idiots. Most voter fraud convictions are for things done by party/campaign workers, government officials or election workers, NOT the voters.

If mail-in is good for *some* people, it should be good for *all*. If not, 45 can get his ass to Florida to vote, especially since he'll probably be there playing golf anyway. My outlook is probably due to voter fraud issues are normally lacking in Iowa. And NO - I am NOT a Democrat.

Mail in voting invites fraud. It's just another way the dems are trying to undermind Trump. They can't win on merit...so they have to undermine, steal and be devious...
I'm sorry your "friend" felt the need to abandon your friendship. I'm a Trump supporter, but I also have friendly acquaintances that are liberals... it is called "respecting anothers' opinions". Politics should not be tearing the country apart the way it is right now. So much carnage just because folks will risk anything to be right...

Sorry Lauren. I feel sorry for this woman too who has obviously lost her intelligence to think for herself and allow that freedom to others. Hypocritical and intolerant. Just as many vilify some Christians disagreeing with same sex marriage, but completely ignore the teachings of Islam and how gays are brutalized. The friends that I no longer deal with have turned into people they never were for their first 60 years. The complete lack of tolerance and respect for others has become the norm, and they are all from one side. It's like they all took a pill that turned them into lemmings. They listen to the same network, believe what they see on Facebook, don't investigate to separate truth from fiction. Recently a video of Trump surfaced on FB of him talking about "he choked" and putting his hands to his neck. I was shocked. I investigated. The video is from when Bloomberg choked on stage during the Dem debates, which I watched (and he did). When I told these friends they went ballistic and said THAT was a lie and he was making fun of George Floyd. Look it up!! But they won't. Regardless of "sides" I investigate everything and find that so much is skewed but some people WANT to believe the worst and have formed a cult of hatred and intolerance. The years of school teachings and selective history lessons, liberal colleges, is showing. From Guided History - "Children in the Soviet Union held a special place in the hearts of citizens and the Party. They represented not only the innocence of youth, but also the promise of the socialist future; in order for the international Marxist Revolution to succeed, the youth had to be treated well and educated politically. Communist authorities took many routes to achieve this goal." As for mail in, it's a shame that our employees are so useless that the database of social security numbers, easily monitored, is never updated and secure to prove identity, death, legitimacy. Using a program that verifies the SS# and allows votes to be cast by phone directly to a program that can't be hacked would be more accurate than mail in. No humans involved. In this climate, I would never trust the workers. They can easily look up affiliation and discard. wow. This is freaking long!!!

@marly...what you have written is so true. We have watched our contemporaries change/morph into totally unrecognizable beings. The level of surface anger is frightening. I'm home recovering from surgery and I leave the house very rarely anymore. A simple walk to the post office and you can feel and witness the extreme behavior changes in people. They say predictions are that the end of the world will be in 60 yrs but we have started and this will be the future behavior. So...stay safe and stay you yourself is the new motto. People have become completely unhinged. Thanks for your thoughts!

At the last general election, someone I know filled out his ballot on the ballot machine, then went back to check on his votes before hitting "complete." The machine had switched his votes to the opposite choices on several of the rulings. He marked them back to his original choice, went forward to finish the check, then went back to check on the check and lo, and behold! the very same thing had happened AGAIN! He called a voter regulator person over and pointed out the event to her. She didn't believe him at first, then watched as he demonstrated again, and the machine changed the votes again.
He researched voting machines when he got home and found that of the 21 machines at that library, 6 changed the votes to the other party. I was astounded when he told me this had happened. The machines had to have been set up to make these changes. Makes you wonder how many voting machines at how many voting places actually faithfully record the Votes the Voter chooses - and how many change what the voter chooses.

I do not know about the West, but here in New York State, fraud in mail-in voting is just about non existent. It has been verified many times.
With all that is going on, I think mail-in voting is an idea whose time has come. For those who want to vote in person, they can always do that instead.

So sorry about your so-called -friend who in-friended you because you both have different opinions....she was not a true friend! Such a sad state of affairs this country is in right now....when will all this pass?!

Danice G said...

Well, sadly, that is social media for example. Just stating one belief or opinion can get a person a lot of un-friending and nasty comments. That existed long before COVID. That is why I mostly stick to blogging, where I can moderate comments and such. Personally, I do not have a problem with voting via mail.

Linda said...

I personally don't have a problem with the mail in vote, given the current times with COVID it may be the safer option for some. Noted I have always voted at an assigned polling place but do know others that needed to do mail-ins which I respect. Saddened by this country's current state, what's important is people vote. And just wanted to add enjoy your blog please continue to share your thoughts...

Not a fan of mail in voting. I know there is fraud with it. Too many snowflakes now who don't know how to DEBATE! When did people choose friends based on ideology?
