Getting Close ~

It feels like I have been hooking this rug forever.  It was started about six weeks ago at Cedar Lakes rug camp in West Virginia.  I am finally close to finishing.

It's Mayfly time in northern Ohio.  (We also call them Canadian soldiers and supposedly the Canadians call them American soldiers.)  Mayflies are aquatic insects belonging to the order Ephemeroptera. This order is part of an ancient group of insects termed the Palaeoptera, which also contains dragonflies and damselflies.  It is supposed to be a sign that the lake (Erie) is healthy, but they just totally freak me out.  They don't bite or poop and only live about 24 hours, though they hatch for several days.  I have this crazy fear of them.  It's totally irrational, but when one lands on me ~ ARGH!  I'm like a crazy woman.  (And the area of town that I live in doesn't have them nearly as bad as some other areas.)

On that disgusting note, thanks so much for stopping by.

They're Baaaaack ~

Commonly known as Canadian soldiers (whether true or not, I've heard in Canada they are called American soldiers), the Lake Erie mayflies have arrived.  They are supposed to be a good thing . . . indicating a healthy lake . . . but they TOTALLY freak me out.  They don't poop or bite, but I have this irrational fear of them.  I just discovered there is even a website dedicated to them and a Facebook page.  These facts are from the website.

"Mayflies usually live for 24-72 hours. Don't forget that they've already spent 1-2 years on the bottom of the lake as a nymph living burrowed in the mud. Within that three days, though, they manage to get into about everything you can imagine. You will find dead mayflies lying around on the sidewalks, in spider webs, on window ledges, etc. They'll go anywhere where there's light at night. Wear a white shirt outside at night and you'll see what I mean.
Many mayflies stack up on the streets below street lights. This is where they land after they get tired of flying around the light for hours on end. Once on the street, they are usually run over by cars and make this "snapping" sound and it's all over. If its dry, they turn into a dust after several hours of traffic. If it's raining, they turn into a thick soup that smells something awful (read 'real dead fish'). The City of Port Clinton has gained approval from the Environmental Protection Agency, and a grant from the Ohio Lake Erie Commission, for the very first mayfly composting site in America!  Now isn't that quite a claim to fame for the city that's already The Walleye Capital of the World!!!"

I took a walk late last evening and then sat on the porch until 9:00 pm and nary a mayfly was seen.  This morning I awoke to an Alfred Hitchcock type nightmare.

Millions of them . . .
I won't be doing any yardwork for a few days.

Thankfully they are usually done hatching in a couple days, but then there are skeletons of them everywhere.

I've been working on a few "hooky" things for my upcoming show in September.  One pumpkin is done . . .

. . . and sunflowers that will be mounted on old bedsprings are in progress.  I'll be happy when the sunflowers on the "bad" linen are done.  Reminder to self.  No matter how thrifty you are, as Kelley stated, "life is too short to hook on bad linen".

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Simple Patriotic Project ~

Raid your kids/grandkids sports stuff.  Walk through a park where there are ballfields.  Check out yard sales (I found one for $.05 a couple weeks ago).  If the balls are dirty, just wash with some dish soap and let dry.  Barn red, antique white, dark blue acrylic paints, an antiquing medium and some spray sealer are all that is needed.

A few years ago I made one.  I tried to get my lines all straight and paint real stars.  Not this time and it was so much faster and so much more fun.

Close up of a star.  You can see how primitively they are done but still look great.

After painting, antique as desired.  Let dry thoroughly and give it a few light coats of the spray sealer.

Hope your weekend is off to a great start.  It's that time of year again near the shores of Lake Erie ~ Canadian soldier time.  Oh, how I despise these creatures, though they are supposed to be a good sign.  The more that hatch from the lake, the healthier the lake.

My clematis - exceptionally gorgeous this year.

They're Baaaack ~

It's that time of year again on the shores of Lake Erie.  Mayflies, aka Canadian soldiers, are hatching from the bottom of the lake.  They are harmless creatures that do not bite, eat or poop ~ basically they just are an annoyance ~ but I have this irrational fear of them.  So far they are not as plentiful as in years past and I hope it stays that way.  They say that their population is directly tied to the health of the lake, so more is better ~ but not for me.

Tomorrow I am heading off to play for a couple of days.  I am taking a trip to Zoar, OH, a German Separatist community founded in 1817, (you can read more about it here) to meet up with longtime friend Wink, stay a wonderful B & B, antique and just enjoy the friendship of 40+ years.

I think I posted a picture a few months ago of this bench I found on Facebook.

Well, my bench that I picked off a neighbor's trash pile a few years ago, isn't nearly as wonderful.

Nonetheless, I decided to give it a try.  DSO helped modify it and shore it up a little since it was even more rotted than I realized.  It was filling in nicely.

Well, the other night I had some unwelcome visitors by the name of Bambi.  They decided to munch on the sweet potato vine, and also some geraniums and pansies.  {{Stop on over to Acorn Hollow and see what they did to her hostas.  GGRRRRR}}

I just finished the binding on my little mat, a freebie design by Kankerdoodle

Well, I better go think about throwing a few things in an overnight bag so I can head out bright and early tomorrow morning.

Thanks so much for stopping by.

The Bugs is Back! The Bugs is Back!

Today did not start out as a very good day. When I finally rolled over and looked at the alarm clock, I discovered at that very minute I should be in my car, backing out of the garage and heading for work. Now in the last four years, I have only done this one other time. Normally it would not be such a big deal and I could call and let them know I was running late, but my co-worker (the two legged one) was off and I knew I had to download pictures from the camera and give it back to the lawn maintenance crew in approximately 25 minutes! Let me tell you I took the world's quickest shower, threw on the first thing I picked up (luckily our office is very casual) and was out the door in less than 15 minutes. Poor Eema did not know what was going on. No breakfast, no potty walk. Luckily my DSO said he would come over to feed and walk her. Somehow I arrived at work only 13 minutes late ~ 23 minutes after I got out of bed. Whew!
AND....on top of that when I looked out the window, I discovered "they" were back. It was NOT a good morning.
A few posts ago, I mentioned that the bugs were back, but only a few. Not this time! For you longtime readers, you may recall a post last summer where I blogged about the Canadian soldiers, aka mayflies, aka the bugs that don't bite or poop, live only a day, but scare the bejesus out of me. Generally, the closer to Lake Erie (they hatch from the lake), the more bugs, but these pics were taken at least a half mile from the lake. They seem to be most attracted to the color white. Just a bit creepy, aren't they?
Hopefully they will only be hatching for a few days and then be done!
A good part of the day was chilly, but it warmed up enough early this evening to take my grandson for a swim. It definitely was not warm enough for me, but of course he enjoyed himself.

Replicas of the Nina and the Pinta are docked at the Port of Lorain. It was hard to get a good picture of them. I cannot even imagine setting sail in one of these over 500 years ago, not knowing where you were going or what you would find. Definitely not Royal Caribbean!

Saturday I'm off to a hook in. Hopefully I can enjoy a little bit of "me time" and even pull a few loops. I'm hoping to have lots of pictures to share with you.
Thank you so much for stopping by and please come again soon!

A few rugs and MILLIONS of bugs!

Since this blog is supposed to be about rug hooking, I thought I'd share a few little rugs I have hooked. I have this rug on one of my antique end tables in the living room. It is about 12 by 12.5 inches and not quite as bright as it appears in the photograph.I got the inspiration for this fraktur bird from a reproduction Greg Shooner redware plate I own. It's about 10 inches tall. It resides on an old shoeshine box in my upstairs bathroom.
This rooster is from a doodle in "Inspirations from the Heart & Soul" by Mad Hen Primitives, Tonya Benson. It's about 11 by 15 and currently lives in my wool closet.
Now for the bugs part! These are mayflies, also known as Canadian soldiers. Yesterday we had none. This morning, we had millions. They hatch from Lake Erie. Just like the midgies, the closer to the lake you get, the more there are. They are about 1.5 to 2 inches long. They live only a day and they don't bite or poop...lol, but I have this irrational fear of them. I feel like I'm in an Alfred Hitchcock movie. They just totally creep me out.
Walking in to work today I was wishing I had my camera when I came upon this white truck. One of my co-workers had taken this picture and shared it with me ~ thanks Dave. Now isn't that just too disgusting? Hopefully in a day or two they will be done hatching, but we never know.
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you're not feeling too creepy.
