Rug Show ~

SO MUCH talent at the rug show at Cedar Lakes rug retreat.  I managed to take pictures of most of the rugs but may have missed a few.

The background on the above rug was so interesting.

 One of my favorite rugs.

Have you heard of the Orphan Train?  I had not.  From Wikipedia ~ "The Orphan Train Movement was a supervised welfare program that transported orphaned and homeless children from crowded Eastern cities of the United States to foster homes located largely in rural areas of the Midwest. The orphan trains operated between 1854 and 1929, relocating about 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, or homeless children."  You can read more about it here.

The Gleaner.  Hooked by my teacher, Cathy Stephan.  Hard to get a good picture since it was flat on a table.

I wish the color had come out better in this picture.  I am considering it for a class next year.  Pattern by Maggie Bonanomi.

This was a really cool idea for a worm separator.  If you're as old as I am, you will remember that coffee was purchased in tins and the lids had to be removed with keys.  Six old coffee tins were screwed together and a handle added.  I may be on the lookout for some :)

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Fun ~ Fun ~ Fun

Cedar Lakes Rug Camp has been around for many years, but this year was the first time I got to experience it ~ and I had such a good time I've already signed up for next year.

Cathy Stephan of Red Barn Rugs was my teacher of choice and a GREAT choice it was.  I highly recommend her if you ever get the opportunity to be in a class with her.  She has so many wonderful patterns to choose from.  I had narrowed it down to three patterns before camp and she brought them all with her, along with her completed rugs.  Local hooker Val and I both decided to hook her Floral Scroll Runner (16" x 50").  It is the long, narrow one on the left.

More of Cathy's rugs.  The lighting in the room wasn't the greatest - for hooking or for pictures.

A hooked "braided" edge.  I need to try this some day.

On my hooking bucket list.  The original was hooked by John Filker, a man from my hometown of Amherst, OH.

Rather than try to hook the dots representing stars, Cathy ties a knot.

Class projects.

I love how she hooked her last name initial in to the rug

Melissa got her rug done :)

Val's Floral Scroll Runner.  She got so much more done than I did!!!

My runner.  I normally don't do much reverse hooking, but that darn star flower on the right was tweaked three times.

Our class.  That is Cathy seated on the left.

More to come.

Quickie ~

Just a quick post to let you know that rug camp was wonderful.  Hooker heaven!!!  The week flew by.  Progress was made on my rug but of course not as much as I had hoped.  I am behind on everything.  I got home today and had lots of mail to sort through.  Newspapers need to be read (even if it's old news, I still need to read it.)  I've unpacked some of my stuff but still have more to do.  Lots of wool to sort ~ trying to remember what I need for my rug and getting the rest out of the way.  The hardest thing is that I am vending at a hook in tomorrow.  I had a few things to make since I sold things at the camp store.  Hopefully I have my act together and can start packing my goods up since I need to leave at 6:30 tomorrow morn.  If all goes as planned, Sunday will be my catch up day - emails and blogs, newspapers, cutting grass, etc.

Here is progress made on my horse rug.  Since I wasn't driving, I had time to hook to and from camp.

I have lots to share about camp in my next posts.

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Happy Mother's Day ~

Welcome, dear friends!  I know I've posted these before but they still make me laugh :)

MOTHER'S DAY QUIPS

PAUL REVERE'S MOTHER:

"I don't care where you think you have to go, young man. Midnight is past your curfew!"

MONA LISA'S MOTHER:

"After all that money your father and I spent on braces, Mona, that's the biggest smile you can give us?"

HUMPTY DUMPTY'S MOTHER:

"Humpty, if I've told you once, I've told you a hundred times not to sit on that wall.
But would you listen to me? Noooo!"

COLUMBUS' MOTHER:

"I don't care what you've discovered, Christopher. You still could have written!"

MICHELANGELO'S MOTHER:

"Mike, can't you paint on walls like other children? Do you have any idea how hard it is to get that stuff off the ceiling?"

ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S MOTHER:

"Again with the stovepipe hat, Abe? Can't you just wear a baseball cap like the other kids?"

MARY'S MOTHER:

"I'm not upset that your lamb followed you to school, Mary, but I would like to know how he got a better grade than you."

BATMAN'S MOTHER:

"It's a nice car, Bruce, but do you realize how much the insurance is going to be?"

GOLDILOCKS' MOTHER:

"I've got a bill here for a busted chair from the Bear family. You know anything about this, Goldie?"

ALBERT EINSTEIN'S MOTHER:

"But, Albert, it's your senior picture. Can't you do something about your hair? Styling gel, mousse, something...?"

JONAH'S MOTHER:

"That's a nice story, but now tell me where you've really been for the last three days."

SUPERMAN'S MOTHER:

"Clark, your father and I have discussed it, and we've decided you can have your own telephone line.
Now will you quit spending so much time in all those phone booths?"

THOMAS EDISON'S MOTHER:

"Of course I'm proud that you invented the electric light bulb, Thomas. Now turn off that light and get to bed!"

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Well, I still have not started to pack.  I am a master procrastinator.  The lawn needs to be mowed and clothes need to be ironed.  So what am I doing?  Wasting time on this dang machine . . . lol. It will get done.  I guess the above cartoon was written for me (except I know that I am one).

Happy, happy Mother's Day to you and Happy Mother's Day to my mom who I'm sure is smiling down on me.

Thanks for stopping by.

Time Management ~

I need a course in time management.  I seem to fritter away most of every day and not accomplish what I hope to.  A couple weeks ago I started making a list of what I need to take to Cedar Lakes rug camp.  I keep adding to the list but have not started gathering things up and I leave Sunday morning.  I ALWAYS overpack!!!  To complicate matters even more, I get home on Friday and Saturday I am vending at our guild hook in.  How did I manage when I had a day job?  Oh, that's right.  I didn't go to rug camp for a week :)

I needed something to hook on and was not ready to get back to my Proud Lion pattern I started in March.  I haven't pulled a loop on it since I got home from the class.  This is a pattern by Winter Cottage that I purchased at the hook in a couple weeks ago.  Not much progress, but at least it's something.

I also was trying to dye some dirty mustard wool.  Well, the first try is the little piece on top.  In person, it was very orange-y.  I then used a seal brown Cushing dye wash over it.  It is better, but still may be too orange.  Oh, well.  It will make great pumpkins :)

Here's another picture of the little mat I recently posted about.  I took the picture outside and was hoping the color would be better.  Maybe a little, but not much . . . sigh.

Soon off to the last 6th grade orchestra concert for the year.  I can't believe another school year is winding down.  It just tickles me to see grandson Jake playing the cello.

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Two Finishes ~

FINALLY!!!  I have some hooking finishes to share.

This little mat is a pattern by Connie Bradley/Wool Yankers.  Started with her in a class in March, it is done - except for the label, of course.  The colors are so much richer in person (as usual).  I will try to get a better picture another time.

I finished hooking this rug (My Garden, pattern by Woolen Memories) months ago, started binding it more than a month ago, and just finished this evening.  It's about darn time.  It's a biggie for me at 22 1/2" x 42 1/2".  These colors are pretty true.

The weather in Ohio was absolutely miserable today.  Mid 40's, windy and rain most of the day.  A horrible weekend for a motorcycle trip, but that is exactly how my son is spending it.  His club had planned a trip to Hocking Hills in southern Ohio.  I guess not one of the guys had the courage to say "Hey, this weather is ridiculous.  Let's just drive down."  Thankfully there was one vehicle driving down so my grandson was warm and dry.  So . . . since my son is gone, I get to watch the granddog.  He calls her his "teacup Newfie".  His ex-girlfriend bought my son and grandson the dog for their birthdays one year.  When she told me how/where she bought the dog, it screamed PUPPY MILL, but of course I could/would not say anything.  She went on about how huge the parents were.  Well . . . Kali (goddess of destruction) is extremely small and most likely not all Newfie.  She looks a lot like a border collie . . . but she is loved and that is all that matters at this point.

Only nine days until I leave for five days of hooking heaven at Cedar Lakes rug camp in West Virginia.  I am so excited.  My teacher is Cathy Stephan of Red Barn Rugs.  Still trying to decide what pattern of hers to hook.  I've narrowed it down to three.

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Patterns and Pattern Information ~

I really behaved myself at the hook in (no fun) and did not buy any wool.  Did buy some wool yarn for binding, but that doesn't count :)

This pattern has long been on my hooking bucket list, but seeing it in needle punch it's just as sweet ~ and so tiny.

Fun little Santa by Maria.  She just has such a unique style.

Terri Leamer has some great patterns and I couldn't resist buying one.  You can find her patterns on etsy here.

Several people were wondering if this pattern was available for purchase.  From what I saw on Facebook, it is based on a print found in an etsy shop called MaryMontage.  It was suggested that you contact the shop owner seeking permission to enlarge it in to a rug pattern.

There was also a question about a pattern for the hooked houses.  Eagles Nest Woolens offers a pattern  and it can be found here.

I finally have a finish to share with you in my next post!!!  Maybe even two :)

Thanks so much for stopping by.
