Crochet 101 ~

{{Well, Darn.  I tried a copy/paste to insert a picture on this post and it deleted all my text.  GGRRRRR 😖}}  Let's try again.

It has been decades since I learned to crochet.  Back then, the only thing I learned was a single crochet.  All the rows the same.  No increasing or decreasing.  After seeing a crochet pumpkin at a friend's house and then Jennie's crochet pumpkin, I decided I would give it a try.  I've watched countless You Tube videos.  I understand how to do the basic stitches.  My problem is the beginning and end of a row.  I can't figure out where to insert the hook.  The sample to the left isn't too bad, but the one on the right is a disaster.  Time to rip that one out, watch more videos, and try again . . . sigh.

Maybe I need to stick with rug hooking 😁

Thanks so much for stopping by.
Pug hugs 😊

  1. Yay!!! That's a good beginning, Lauren. Don't give up yet, you have only begun. I'm sure you have some friends who can hook and maybe they can coatch you on where you have difficulty. Maybe the yarn store where you buy yarn can give you some pointers. I find I can learn better with a book that has some illustrations of the different stitches. Good luck with this. Once you get the hang of it, it's a lot of fun and goes quite fast.

  2. I am certain you will master this just as you have mastered your hooking and stitching. My cousin taught me to crochet when I was young and he stayed with us while my father had dialysis. I actually mastered making several pairs of slippers, but never pursued it after that. My sister is an avid crocheter or at least she was when I knew her. ~Robin~

  3. I crocheted afghans and part of a bikini top (f you recall from an old post 'lost and found' I think it was. And used to knit everything but recently tried to continue a started knitted shawl and I was like a fish out of water. That old saying...'use it or lose it' surely is fact. Good luck, maybe you'd be better served to hook a pumpkin, just sayin'.

  4. I remember that there is a kind of "trick" to it. I know in single crochet to chain that one extra stitch before turning your work. Always turn your work the same way (clockwise or counter). I used to crochet a lot, but that's almost 50 years ago now! Yikes. Good luck! I also didn't realize in crochet that different people did it different ways. Some "catch" more of a the backside of a stitch than the others do.

  6. I was thinking of learning to crochet so that I could use the technique as a rug binding/ border. Our local library has a group that crochets and knits and is willing to teach folks. I just haven't taken the time. How are you feeling tonight?

  7. That's how I feel when trying to knit. The basic knit/purl are OK, but the rest - Yeesh! I wonder if it would work to mark the last stitch in a row with a bit of scrap yarn (or wool) before doing that chain up to the next row. It may be easier to see where the hook needs to go when you turn the work?

And one thing I learned from Piecework magazine - if you have *old* patterns from the UK - they use the same terms for different stitches than the US did. Apparently that little detail can give even experienced crocheters fits on some patterns. I don't know if that's still the case.

  8. Well being a leftie I learned how to crochet by watching my gramma do it and doing everything backwards. LOL There were no books out there for lefties when I was 15. I can read a pattern now, but anytime I watch a You Tue video they confuse me because they are right handed. Good luck with your pumpkin. I planned on doing this before time got ahead of me. Guess next year. Janice

  9. I never ever tried to crochet , I tried knitting & can only make basic scarfs & gave up after trying to knit in the round ....I'll stick to hooking & punch needle.... W. Cushing has a wonderful pattern for hooked pumpkins , I need to get that ! She sells them in a large pattern or you can get 2 small ones . They look so cute & would be fun to make in different colors !
